From Barcelona, we set off on a short getaway to explore one of Spain’s most beautiful ski resorts. In March, we began our four-hour drive through the Catalan countryside.
Our destination? A ski resort with a royal connection. Founded in the 1960s, Baqueira-Beret is not only Spain’s largest ski resort, with 147 kilometres of pistes, but also a favourite destination of the Spanish royal family. Over the decades, the resort has continued to evolve, and we were lucky enough to stay in its most modern area, Val de Ruda.
Arriving in the Val d’Aran: A Winter Wonderland
After a scenic drive through snow-covered landscapes and a relaxing coffee break in Tremp, we finally reached Baqueira-Beret.
The Val d’Aran, where the ski resort is located, feels like a completely different world – a valley known in summer for its lush green meadows and dense forests, but transformed in winter into a snow-covered wonderland.
High mountains, fairytale forests and traditional villages filled with stone and slate houses surrounded us. It was immediately clear that this region is not only magical in winter, but also a paradise for hikers in summer. We knew right away that we would have to come back and explore it in the warmer months.
Our Home Away from Home: Comfort in Val de Ruda
Our accommodation was part of a modern residential complex designed perfectly with skiers in mind. Cars? Nowhere to be seen. All traffic disappears into a huge underground car park, while an extension of the main cable car connects the complex directly with the ski area. Within minutes, the gondolas took us up to around 2,000 metres above sea level – without the stress or long waits.
Even better, the ski lockers were located in the basement, directly beneath the cable car. A lift took us comfortably from our apartment straight to the slopes. Getting our equipment to and from the pistes could hardly have been easier. It was the kind of convenience that won us over immediately.
Three Days on the Slopes: Variety and Pure Nature
For three days, Michael and I explored the slopes of Baqueira-Beret. The weather was as varied as the landscape itself: from brilliant sunshine to icy, cloudy days with temperatures dropping to minus 9°C. Baqueira-Beret may not be the largest ski area we have ever visited – our personal favourite remains Dolomiti Superski in Italy, with its 1,200 kilometres of pistes – but for a few days, it offered more than enough variety.
What impressed us most was the beauty of the outer slopes, which wound through untouched, natural landscapes. There was hardly any sign of civilisation – just snow, mountains and silence. The snow conditions were excellent, with up to 250 centimetres of powder at higher elevations. With the resort ranging from 1,500 to 2,600 metres, conditions were ideal. Most of the pistes were blue to red, making them particularly well suited to intermediate skiers and anyone who enjoys cruising through the mountains.
The Pros and Cons of Baqueira-Beret
Our stay in Baqueira-Beret was a wonderful experience and left us with many positive impressions.
✅ Excellent organisation: The car-free area and clever infrastructure – including the underground car park, ski lockers and direct cable-car connection – made everything incredibly convenient.
✅ Pure nature: The breathtaking scenery and untouched slopes at higher elevations were a dream for anyone who loves being surrounded by nature.
✅ Relatively close to Barcelona: The four-hour drive through Catalonia was not only manageable but also incredibly scenic, making Baqueira-Beret a great option for a short break or an extended weekend getaway.
❌ Basic mountain huts: Compared with the cosy and culinary-focused mountain restaurants of Austria or the Italian Alps, such as those in Dolomiti Superski, the facilities at Baqueira-Beret felt rather basic. If gourmet food and traditional après-ski atmosphere are high on your list, you may want to explore restaurants outside the ski area.
❌ Limited piste variety: For passionate skiers like Michael, the range of pistes could start to feel a little repetitive after two or three days. If you are looking to rack up huge numbers of kilometres, this may not be the ideal destination.
Our Verdict: A Wonderful Destination for Nature Lovers and Skiers
Despite its minor drawbacks, Baqueira-Beret was an absolute highlight for us. The combination of excellent infrastructure, breathtaking natural scenery and its relatively easy access from Barcelona makes it an ideal destination for anyone looking for a relaxing yet rewarding ski getaway.
Would we come back? Absolutely!
Perhaps in summer, this time to explore the green meadows and hiking trails of the Val d’Aran. But one thing is certain: Baqueira-Beret has cast its spell on us.
